Beaconline, a Columbus insurtech that builds claims-automation software for regional carriers, has raised $180 million in a Series C round led by a coalition of Midwestern growth funds. The company says the capital will fund a near-doubling of its engineering team and an expansion into Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky over the next 18 months.

The firm's pitch is unglamorous but sticky: most mid-sized insurers still route claims through a patchwork of legacy systems and manual review. Beaconline layers a decision engine on top of that mess, flagging straightforward claims for fast payout and escalating the rest to human adjusters. Executives say the approach has cut processing time for partner carriers by roughly 40 percent.

Why Columbus

The company is part of a growing cluster of financial-technology startups choosing central Ohio over the coasts, drawn by lower operating costs and a deep bench of insurance talent tied to the region's established carriers. Local officials have leaned into the trend, pitching Columbus as an affordable alternative for engineers priced out of larger metros.

Beaconline's leadership was careful to temper expectations, noting that expansion into new states means new regulators and new data to train against. Still, the round gives the company a runway few of its peers can match heading into a year when insurers are under pressure to cut costs.
