Payroll Startup Doubles Its Columbus Headcount After Landing Retail Clients
Riverbend Pay, a Columbus payroll and scheduling startup aimed at hourly-workforce employers, has doubled its local headcount after signing a cluster of regional retail and restaurant clients this spring. Most of the new hires are in customer support and implementation — the unglamorous work of migrating a business off spreadsheets without breaking anyone's paycheck.
The company's wager is that small and mid-sized employers want software that handles scheduling, tip pooling, and payroll in one place rather than three. That integration is also its biggest technical risk: a bug in scheduling can cascade into a payroll error, and payroll errors erode trust fast.
Leadership says the coming holiday hiring surge will be the platform's real exam, as clients spin up seasonal workers and lean on the system to keep shifts covered. The company has deliberately over-hired on support to absorb the load.
